#FridayFinds: Are You There, God? by Theresa A. Campbell

This week Fridays Find is a two part find from the tremendously talented and sweet Theresa A. Campbell. She’s a full fledged woman of faith and her books are bursting at the spine with the power and presence of God. Initially, I was going to share her most recent work, God Has Spoken, but I want y’all to read Are You There, God? first.

ARE YOU THERE GOD

About the book:

As a young woman in rural Jamaica, Dupree struggles to maintain a home for herself and the ailing aunt who is raising her after she was abandoned by her teenage mother. The effort of life with no electricity, running water, or money often leaves Dupree battered and bruised, but she refuses to be defeated. She might have been forced to grow up too fast, but she will not succumb to the wiles of the devil, choosing instead to rely on the power of Almighty God to help her through.
After a brutal attack that takes her to hell and back, Dupree must reach for her inner strength once again to survive. Her journey for a better life leads her to Kingston, a city some people refer to as “Jamaica’s Sodom and Gomorrah.” There, she sees and experiences things beyond her imagination. Dupree seeks comfort in the arms of her Prince Charming–but he might just be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Caught up in a web of lies and betrayal, Dupree fights to save her life. In pure desperation, she seeks an answer to her question, “Are you there, God?” Will she be around to hear His response, or will it be too late?

Excerpt:

Suddenly out of nowhere two hands grabbed her from behind. It happened so fast Dupree had no time to run. Her eyes grew wide in terror and she tried to scream but a large hand was already covering her mouth. Dupree struggled to free herself but she felt as if she was trapped by a brick wall. The person who held her was very tall and strong. Poor Dupree was no match for her attacker. She knew that she was about to be violated in the worst way and felt the sandwich she ate at church earlier that evening forcing its way back up. She was getting sick to her stomach.

Still kicking and struggling to break free, Dupree felt the grip loosen a little, and she spun around to face her attacker. Almost instantaneously she felt a hard, stinging sensation across her face as she was knocked to the ground. Her small back made a hard contact with the unpaved track that had a lot of loose, prodding, sharp stones and gravel. But she didn’t feel the pain as she looked up and stared straight into the eyes of the devil standing a few inches away from her.

Her attacker wore a stocking mask over his face with only his wild eyes showing, and Dupree could have sworn that they were red. Who knew after spending all her life in church and reading about the devil that she would actually meet him? But here he was in the flesh and she just knew he was about to kill her.

Dupree’s mind flashed to Aunt Madge. Who would help her now? Would Aunt Madge die of a broken heart after hearing of her rape and murder? Dupree felt the tears about to fall but willed herself not to cry. She remembered something Aunt Madge once told her: “It’s not over until God said so.”

Suddenly the story of Daniel who was thrown into the lion’s den and came out without a scratch popped into Dupree’s mind and her body began to relax. Dupree knew that Jesus was the same today as He was yesterday so she did what Daniel did: she prayed.

Dupree slowly rose to her knees and lifted her hands to the heavens, oblivious of her attacker who was drawing closer to her, and she prayed without ceasing. She called on the almighty God for protection, and praised and blessed His holy name.

“Precious Jesus, I know if you bring me to it then you can bring me through it. Lord, remember I am your daughter and you are my Father. Please keep me safe from the devil who is about to take my life. Please remember Aunt Madge needs me. I know I am not perfect and I have lost my faith in you so many times, but please forgive me for all my sins, dear Lord. Please do not let the devil win this battle tonight. Let us show him that you are the mighty warrior. Dear Father, I submit my life into your hands right now to do as you please, because your will must be done.”

HOW HARD IS IT TO FORGIVE?

After finding the biological mother who abandoned her as a baby, learning the identity of her birth father and her biological brother, Dupree is left distraught and betrayed. Like a volcano about to erupt, she vows to have nothing to do with her newly discovered family–so help her God! However, if Dupree’s mother, Tiny, has anything to say about it, Dupree won’t be able to keep that vow.

How does a former teenaged runaway become a wealthy, sophisticated business executive? Tiny’s quest for happiness and independence in Kingston, Jamaica, has taken her on a life-altering journey through hell. After a vicious attack and a serious sickness that leaves her fighting for her life in the hospital, Tiny prays for death . . . but then God speaks. Will she listen to His voice? What exactly is He saying?

Mama Pearl tiptoed slowly toward the old cars, her steps hesitant but determined. The first few cars she looked into were empty. She continued toward the back when a bad odor filled her nose. With her face twisted up, Mama Pearl took deep breaths as she continued walking.

A scream lodged in her throat as she approached the last car. “Oh, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl whispered in shock. Two pieces of sticks, resembling legs, were hanging out the opened back door. Her heart slamming against her chest, Mama Pearl walked closer and saw the scrawny, young girl shaking uncontrollably in the backseat. She smelled like rotten garbage. Tears filled Mama Pearl’s eyes.

Mama Pearl quickly rested the box in her hand on top of the car and leaned inside to look at the young girl. Suddenly, two pair of red, haunted eyes stared up at her, piercing her soul.

“Help me,” the weak voice begged a little above a whisper.

Mama Pearl gasped loudly and pulled her head out of the car. She cushioned her weak body against the car as her jelly feet felt as if they were about to crumble. “Lord, dear Lord,” Mama Pearl muttered. “Dear Lord, dear Lord.”

Mama Pearl was not a stranger to the homeless people scattered all over Kingston. She was a long-standing viewer of the poverty that hit so many Jamaicans and only seemed to get worse, day by day.

Her heart bled as she turned and stared at the sick child again. She looked as if she was a minute away from death’s door.

Tiny rambled some gibberish and moaned in agony as sharp needles pricked her all over her ice-cold body. Her teeth chattered, and her eyes rolled around listlessly in her head.
